Two weeks after the largest raid of undocumented workers in U.S. history, filmmakers Jennifer Szymaszek and Greg Bronson started filming “In the Shadow of the Raid.” The documentary, which focuses on the consequences of the May 2008 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in which nearly 400 workers were arrested and deported, takes place in Postville, Iowa the site of the raid and in two rural villages in Guatemala where some of the deported workers were sent. It’s about empowerment. The Census allows every community in America to get the representation, the federal funding and the recognition they deserve. Saenz Newsmaker

Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) president and general counsel, Thomas Saenz, in an interview with the Associated Press on Friday, said that he expects work on rewriting immigration law to take place next year in Congress. Saenz explained that if comprehensive immigration legislation is not possible then Congress should at least pass smaller reforms – what he calls “down payments.” (more…)

Today, President Obama announced the appointment of the following individuals to sit on the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino: Emilio Estefan, Jr., Andrés W. López, Cindy Peña, Abigail M. Pollak, and Cid Wilson.  The President also announced that Gilberto Cárdenas and José B. Fernández, who are both current Members of the Commission, will continue their work on the Commission. (more…)
